Military – Active Duty, Reserve/National Guard, Veterans

Excelsior College (NY) partners with the New York State Veterans of Foreign Wars.

. . . The Excelsior College and VFW education partnership provides discounted tuition rates to veterans who are VFW members and their spouses. The college enrollment fees for veterans who qualify for the partnership is cut from $395 to $130. Qualifying veterans taking at least six credits will also not have to pay a $440 annual student services fee and will have a one-time graduation fee cut from $495 to $130.

Annual VFW dues are $35. . . .

Any chance this opportunity could go national?

An online breast surgery degree?  Yes, although not totally.  As one University of East Anglia professor states: “80% of the work will be done online and 20% is practical”.

Online graduate certificates offered by Stanford University are now eligible for reimbursement under the Post 9/11 GI Bill.

President Obama is pushing a wireless broadband initiative.  And seriously, stay tuned, as this plan could prove beneficial to many Americans.

More for-profit college complaints out of Florida:

…Florida’s attorney general is currently investigating eight for-profit colleges, which have been the subjects of 183 consumer complaints. Two-thirds of the complaints were against two schools, Everest University and Kaplan University, which both operate large online programs out of Florida

Mississippi State University extends its special MBA tuition rates to a much wider military and veteran audience.

The special $353.50 per-credit-hour rate–as compared to $502.50 rate for all others–now is available to the following Southeastern military groups:

–Active-duty personnel;

–Active-duty personnel serving outside the region, but maintaining a legal residence within the area, as designated in the federal Soldiers and Sailors Civil Relief Act of 1940;

–National Guard members;

–Military Reserve members (all services);

–U.S. veterans; and

–Active-duty or veteran MSU alumni.

How ’bout them Bulldogs?!?!

Michigan State University teaches equine-related courses over the web too?  You bet, and now offering classes in Spanish in conjunction with Universidad Mayor (Chile).

How about this 74 year-young University of Southern Mississippi nursing graduate?  Yes!

In terms of online degrees, the University of California system has seen the light (maybe).

The Air Force Times comments on potential improvements for the present GI Bill:

…Allow veterans taking distance-learning courses to draw the living stipend that is now limited to those attending conventional brick-and-mortar colleges. To do otherwise is to favor traditional schools over online universities — for no particular reason…

Excellent point, especially when considering the number of brick-and-mortar colleges offering fully online programs.

$7,400 MBA for military personnel?

October 05, 2009 By: Paul Category: Active Duty Military, Military, Online Education, Private Colleges and Universities, Reserve/National Guard, Veterans Comments Off on $7,400 MBA for military personnel?

Last November, we examined graduate degrees with veterans discounts.   Well, it appears Brenau University (GA) offers a 10-course, online MBA, which for military personnel (active duty, veterans, retirees, reservists) equals a significant discount from normal rates.

A few caveats exist.  For example, apart from possessing a 4-year undergrad degree, prospective students should also complete/have completed four foundation courses.

For qualified students, this seems like a great opportunity.

CTC announces MyCAA

June 16, 2009 By: Paul Category: Active Duty Military, Community and Technical Colleges, Military, Money Matters, Reserve/National Guard Comments Off on CTC announces MyCAA

Central Texas College recently announced participation in the Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts (MyCAA) for “spouses of active duty and active guard and reserve military” members.  This program is similar to a scholarship and may provide up to $6,000 in financial assistance to eligible individuals.

It’s also worth mentioning that many colleges and universities participate in MyCAA.
