The University of Wisconsin System unveils the “UW Flexible Degree”.

. . . The new path to a degree will allow adults to start classes anytime, work at their own pace and earn credit for what they already have learned in school or on the job once they prove college-level competencies, UW officials said.

The path may be available as soon as this fall and could help a range of students, especially adults already in jobs, adults caring for children and soldiers deployed overseas, Walker said. . . .

Greater accessibility is always a good thing.

Massachusetts Institute Of Technology (M.I.T.) will offer a free online certificate program.  More here.  And the New York Times has this:

. . .Educators at other universities applauded the M.I.T. move.

“It seems like a very big deal because the traditional higher education reaction to online programs was, yeah, but it’s not a credential,” said Richard DeMillo, director of the Center for 21st Century Universities at the Georgia Institute of Technology. “So I think M.I.T. offering a credential will make quite a splash. If I were still in industry and someone came in with an M.I.T.x credential, I’d take it.” . . .

A big deal, indeed.

For-profit Watch

The Birmingham News: “College students trapped with big debt and few jobs after attending expensive for-profit schools“.

. . .“They are taking advantage of our students, using them, abusing them and beating them into the ground, and I have a problem with that,” says Dr. Perry Ward, president of Lawson State.

Ward says students victimized by the system are likely locked into a cycle of poverty for the rest of their lives.

“They can’t get eligible for financial aid, have no skills and can’t go to work, and are relegated to low-paying jobs somewhere,” he said.
For-profit schools make it their priority to prey on the less fortunate and less educated, says Ward. . .

Please, please consider ALL options before making any commitments!  Please.
