Ohio State: Online Certificate in Food Science

January 27, 2010 By: Paul Category: Continuing Education, Name Recognition, Online Education, State Colleges and Universities, Success Stories Comments Off on Ohio State: Online Certificate in Food Science

Via the Dayton Daily News (OH), we discover a new online continuing education program in food service. Check out these comments from the report.

…Jeff Culbertson, a food-science professor, said there are plenty of opportunities for students. In specialized fields such as food science, he said, there are more job openings than qualified workers.

Demand is so great that companies such as H.J. Heinz, Frito-Lay, Starbucks and even Jack Daniel’s are hiring people with related degrees such as chemistry and then sending them through a one-year, online course that Culbertson runs at Ohio State. He said food-science graduates start out making about $50,000 a year for an undergrad degree and about $65,000 for a graduate degree…

More about the program here.  Pricing for the 5-course certificate is $2,500.

Wall Street Journal talks “cachets”

September 16, 2009 By: Paul Category: Continuing Education, Name Recognition, Unique Online Degree or Certificate Comments Off on Wall Street Journal talks “cachets”

Yes, online non-credit certificates finally receive a little love from none other than the highly distinguished Wall Street Journal.  Money quote:

…Of course, not every online program is worthwhile, and online certificates aren’t for everyone, says John Fernandes, president and CEO of AACSB International, the main accrediting body for business schools. Students should have a clear understanding of what they want to achieve, he says. “You need to do your homework. Ask yourself, ‘What is this course yielding for the starting point of future employment?’?”

Executive recruiter Nancy Keene agrees. “No matter what school, it is important to know the brand of the school, what it might add to your [qualifications] package and how it will be received by your target hiring managers,” says Ms. Keene, a director in Stanton Chase International’s Dallas office…

We admit it. We’re way behind updating our online certificates page. This we hope to rectify this very soon.

Temple University – Online “Mini-MBA”

August 31, 2009 By: Paul Category: Continuing Education, Name Recognition, Private Colleges and Universities, Unique Online Degree or Certificate Comments Off on Temple University – Online “Mini-MBA”

Via this thread on DegreeInfo.com comes word of yet another continuing education opportunity.  Fox School of Business at Temple University offers four different “Mini MBA” programs at a distance.

Tuition for each program costs $3,2oo.

The DegreeInfo thread contains much valuable criticism, both pro and con.  Considering pricepoints on similar certificates, as well as the accompanying name recognition, this isn’t really such a bad deal.
