It appears the nuclear engineering program via Excelsior College is making lots of noise.

“Some of our students have equal knowledge to the instructors,” said LeClair, who first came to Excelsior in 1988 as a nuclear industry adviser and was named dean in January 2010. “Those students bring a wealth of knowledge to our program … because they’re in the field every day, gaining experience.”

The Chronicle explains “Why Some Elite Colleges Give Away Courses Online“.

An intriguing statistic via the Syracuse University student newspaper, The Daily Orange: “Starting salaries for community college students higher than those of private university students“.

Community college graduates have a higher average starting salary than those from state or private universities, according to a new study.

Graduates with an associate degree from one of Florida’s 28 community colleges earned an average of $47,708, while those who graduated from one of Florida’s 11 public universities earned about $36,552, according to an article published in The Miami Herald Jan. 1. Each year the Florida secondary school system tracks college graduates from the previous school year and records this information…

Another college, Winona State University, plans on offering the Social Media for Business certificate over the web.  It is taught by LERN.org, a non-profit organization.  We covered this program last year.

Now, this is really cool, and highlights all the great things about distance learning.  A group of librarians from Grand Bahama — 15, to be exact — enrolled together in an online certificate program taught by Blue Grass Community and Technical College in Lexington, KY.  So far, 11 have graduated.

Arguing in favor of for-profit colleges?  Meanwhile, Stephen Burd has another well-written round-up on the sector.  And there’s also talk concerning new and improved, for-profit safeguards in North Dakota.

Se Habla Español?  The Knight Center at The University of Texas at Austin is taking applications for an online course in Spanish called “How to Write for the Web”.  Aspiring students must also be located in Latin America or the Caribbean.
